多摩美術大学生産デザイン学科テキスタイルデザイン専攻、2024年度前期の交換留学生を紹介します。

Chris Leさん（オスロ国立芸術大学/ノルウェー）、Brahma Bonolakshmiさん（ナショナル・インスティテュート・オブ・デザイン/ インド）、Bapat Isha Vikramさん（ナショナル・インスティテュート・オブ・デザイン/ インド）の３名の皆さんが４月から７月まで、さまざまなクラスに参加し制作に取り組みます。

Chris Le

Hello, I’m Chris. As an exchange student from Oslo, currently in my first year of a master’s program in clothing and costume design at Oslo National Academy of the Arts. I am thrilled to be at Tama Art University in Japan, specifically within the textile department. This exchange program offers me a unique opportunity to merge my existing knowledge with new perspectives and processes. Immersed in Japan’s rich culture, I am inspired by its minimalistic architecture, disciplined lifestyle, and innovative infrastructures. My work here allows me to revisit my previous creations through a fresh lens, enhancing my efficiency in handcraft and the use of new apparatuses. 

All the classes are taught in Japanese, but the teacher is very supportive and helps me navigate the language barrier. I’m currently in the weaving course, and my fellow students are also incredibly helpful. The atmosphere around the school is very peaceful, especially in the library, where I’ve spent a lot of time exploring a rich collection of books and literature. It’s a beautiful area to study in and deeply inspiring. Additionally, I have had the pleasure of meeting some incredible people who have made me feel welcomed and supported throughout my time in Japan. 

The experience at Tama Art University is vitalizing my creativity, enabling me to both envision and materialize new, unforeseen designs that blend traditional textile art with contemporary practices.

Brahma Bonolakshmi

Hi, my name is Bono and I am from National Institute of design, Ahmedabad, India. I am in my third year of textile design. 

Back in my home college I learned how to weave, make print repeats and learned different types of printing- screen and digital. I also have the knowledge of both natural and chemical dyes.

My exposure to a range of techniques has cultivated my ability to swiftly grasp new concepts and excel in situations out of my comfort zone. In Tamabi, I have chosen five courses which are Batik, Yuzen, Felt, Basketry and Fiber Material and expression. I have chosen those courses so I get to learn different techniques and explore different materials from a different perspective. 

I am in batik class currently which I am enjoying a lot. Despite of the language barrier I learned a lot from sensei. I am working on my final artwork right now which is inspired by the things I have seen and experienced during my stay here in Japan during the last two months. Everyone is very helpful here and go out of their way to help you. 

I am very grateful for this opportunity to study in Tamabi as an exchange student and I am enjoying my time in Tokyo. 

Bapat Isha Vikram

Hey, my name is Isha Bapat, I’m from India. 

I’m a 3rd year textile Design student, at the National Institute of Design. I’m fond of nature and animals and that part of me also shows itself in my art. I also enjoy experimenting and using colors in my designs. 

India has many traditional Textile crafts unique to each of its states. I have always been interested in these crafts, which is why I chose Textile Design.
I’ve wanted to come to Japan as the culture and language have always fascinated me. So I was very excited about coming to Tamabi for a semester. 
In my time here so far, I’ve tried Edo embroidery and have been working on a group project in studio 1, designing textiles for indoor spaces (the campus bakery). I will also participate in the Yuzen dying course that’s coming up.

I intend to spend my time here learning and absorbing knowledge from everyone around me and making the most of the facilities that have been provided to me.
I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and want to use it to fully immerse myself into my work, the culture and the city. I’ve already had a great time in the past month, getting to know the other students and experiencing Tamabi campus life.
