今年度より始まった、オランダのリートフェルト・アカデミーとのテキスタイル間での短期交換留学プログラム。9月から4ヶ月多摩美に来ていた交換留学生のエリゼ・リトバーグに今回の短期留学について感想を聞いてみました。

多摩旋風

When I came to Tokyo in September, I really had no idea what to expect. Frankly, I hadn’t read anything about  Japanese culture so I went completely blank on this adventure. My second day in Tokyo started well, when my roommate took me to the school festival of the other academy in the center. I was totally drunk, lifted on stage and danced along with the Samba band. I have no idea how we got home.

９月に東京に来た時、私はこれからどの様な生活になるのか全く予想をしていませんでした。正直なところ日本文化について前もって何も読んでいなかったので、この冒険で完全に頭の中がまっ白になりました。私の東京での第２日目、ルームメイトが東京の街中にある学校の学校祭に連れて行ってくれました。私は完全に酔っぱらってステージに上げられ、サンババンドの音楽で踊っていました。その日はどうやって家まで戻ったか覚えていません。

In Tama, I spoke to Mayu and together we made a schedule so I could attend different classes.Soon I started to realize how much knowledge and techniques Japan has in textiles. Several times I was asked under the guise of “Eliza-san, this is traditional Japanese technique, you do it!” to participate. Sometimes I became dizzy of the pace and amount of work people do. Normally I go a day or 4 to school and I have Friday, Saturday, Sunday only to cook, do laundry, drink wine and relax. But it feels really valuable to be here and learn as much as possible, and to go back with a backpack full of experiences, contacts and knowledge.I learned a lot by observing all textile students who produce the most beautiful textiles with an ease as if they eat noodles! Respect! So much creativity and skills made me really impressed.

多摩美で、吉川先生とこれからのスケジュールについて話し合い、いろいろな授業に参加する事になりました。間もなく、日本にはどれだけ多くのテキスタイルに関する情報や技術が有るのか理解し始めました。何度も『エリザさん、これは日本の伝統技術です。やってみなさい！』と授業に参加する様に言われました。皆のそのペースの早さと仕事量の多さに時々めまいがするほどでした。基本的に私は４日ほど大学に行き、金土日は料理をしたり洗濯したりワインを飲んでリラックスしていました。しかしここでの生活は本当に価値が有ると感じ、できる限りの事を学んで、帰る時にはたくさんの経験、コンタクト、知識をバックパック一杯に詰め込んで持ち帰ろうと思いました。学生達がとても美しいテキスタイルを、まるでそばを食べている時の様にいとも簡単に創り出す様子を観察しながら、私は多くの事を学びました。 尊敬！多くの創造力と技術に私は本当に感銘を受けました。

What I noticed during my stay here, is the importance of networking in Japan. Everyone knows each other, so many people I got introduced to,  many people were open to share their knowledge, that feels really warm and caring. At the same time I also had trouble with this during my stay. I’m totally not used to being part of a group. In the Netherlands people act much more individual, they can not really care what someone else does. Where I’m feeling  like a princess in this country, Tomoyuki might feel sometimes a bit unseen.

私のこの滞在で気づいた事は、日本ではネットワークを作るのが大切であるという事。皆がつながっていて、多くの人々を紹介され、多くの人々がオープンに知識を分け与えてくれる、この事はとても暖かく思いやりを感じました。同時にこの事は私の滞在の間における問題点でも有りました。私はグループの一部である事に全く慣れていないのです。オランダでは人々はもっと個人的に行動し、他人が何をしているのか気にしません。私がこの国でお姫様かの様に感じているのと反対に、トモユキ* はオランダで少し透明人間になったかの様に感じているかもしれません。

*トモユキ = エリゼと入れ替えでリートフェルトアカデミーに短期留学中の多摩美テキスタイルの３年生。

The lessons and techniques that I have followed are; Silkscreen, Batik, Shibori, Rice paste, and many things in dyeing. During my stay here, I have written a lot, and I also used words in my work.

私が受けた授業はシルクスクリーンプリント、ろうけつ染め、絞り染め、　米糊染め、そして多くの染めに関する事についてでした。滞在中、私はたくさんの事を書き綴り、またテキスタイルの作品にも言葉をモチーフに使いました。

I would like to thank everyone for making my staying in Tama a great experience! Thanks for answering my questions, explain techniques, giving materials and help with communication.  It was great and hope to see you in the future!
